First Thoughts: Sakura Wars ~So Long, My Love~

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Ah, Sakura Wars. A strategy / dating sim series that has, as far as I know, only just now made it to the US.

Well, I purchased the PS2 release of it yesterday, and played for a few hours before I had to get to sleep.

I can give a simple summary of my thoughts so far: Awesome. The characters have a classic goofyness that fits in with the styles of the characters in the previous anime and game releases (or at least, what one can gather from the Anime, which have made it to the US in the past few years). The game has a style of NCP interaction depth I have never seen before in a game, and it works really well, to the point where that interaction is actually how you “power up” character stats for combat.

As for combat itself, well, you would simply have to play the game, or see it played, to get a full understanding. :D

I would say more, or try to type up a nice, overall review, but I am pressed for time.

Later!

Reversion to my old video card, and Call of Pripyat.

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

So, I got Stalker: Call of Pripyat, last night. I was going to play, but the game simply wouldn’t show for shit on my comp. Now, the other 2 stalker games ran as fine as they could, anyway, on my aging machine. So what was the issue?

Simple. The video card. Amazingly, as useful as that Diamond Radeon wtfever was, and as nice as it was to finally be able to watch videos encoded in a certain random codec, I sadly could not play PIU Pro with it, NOR would it run a Stalker title to save its life.

So, sadly, I have had to resort back to my Nvidia 6200.. nothing else really is an option, as these are about the best I know of in basic PCI video cards. Seriously, don’t give me that “what, no PCI express” crap: don’t you think if I had the ability to use such a card I would? This comp is from 2003. Yes, I need a new one, and will get one when I can. For now, this will still suffice.

Point is, it is sad that I have to go back to a card that has given me hell for a year now. Oh well.

Interesting note is, that radeon was fucked up to begin with: I got it used of epay, and what do you know if the fan wasn’t dead on it. Luckily I have a specialty fan always aimed at my video card, but that isn’t the point: it should work, period.

As for CoP: looks nice, from the few minutes I finally have been able to play of it.

Final Fantasy IX

Monday, March 1st, 2010

OK, I have been on a major Final Fantasy kick recently. Awesome, right? Well, I have finally realized something: Why I do not like Final Fantasy IX.  It is actually pretty simple: I cannot related to any of the characters.  In 5, I loved the idea of the adventurer thrown into a random conflict. The cast was interesting, simple, and the world(s) were fun to be in. In 6, well, I love the whole magic concept, and how the Gestal empire was using it as a weapon, so the world was great. I liked all the characters, and really felt sympathy for Terra and her personal conflicts. She seemed just genuinely likable, and the way the story spread across so many people was amazing.

Then comes 7 and 8. Both Cloud and Squall I felt very similar to, in their personalities and internal conflicts. Zach as well, as I play Crisis Core now, I can connect with pretty well. As for Aeris, well, I have a friend in real life who is nearly identical to her. More than enough said on that one. :D   As for the worlds, I have to say, 7′s was just an amazing fusion of magic and machine, and 8 had some of the best concept behind it I had ever seen.  This all, of course, was a decade or more ago.

Then comes 9. A call back to the originals. Now, I love that idea, and thought the gameplay was fun, but the story was just, well, pretty boring. I found myself trying to play the game just to get it over with. I never did finish it, as the difficulty just made me not care anymore.  I got about to the Gulug stone section, and that was it.

As for the world, it was kinda nice, but it seemed rather random. As for the cast, I could not relate to a single one of them, and they all felt stock and recycled from other concepts: nothing that felt real. I had nothing in commmon with any of them, and so, honestly, couldn’t give a shit less about their conflict. Unlike 5-8, and 10, I simply did not have any reason to want to play the game.

On the topic of 10, when you combine a “dead city” with so much heavy magic, asian style influinces to the world, and oddly, just the overall morbiness of their world, it really struck with me. So, well, there ya go. 10 was alright in my book, and I completed it.

I really don’t care to much for FF4 or earlier.  Nice stories and all, but the play style, even when revived, would just turn me off, and while I like what I do know about some characters (from Dissidia), I really have no interest in playing those games anytime soon, if ever.

As for 12, well, meh.. Ivalice should stay the fuck out of the core FF series. 11 can go directly to hell, and 13, well, I am interested, but only slightly. At this point, I don’t even consider them final fantasies, as Sakaguchi is no longer with the company.

Those are just my thoughts. Outside of 11, I think they are all good games, in their own rights, but to me, like everyone who plays them, there is a certain point where it stops being a game and becomes an experience; where you arent just a guy with a controller, oh no. You feel for the cast, and in the end, for the hours you are playing, you become Cloud, Squall, Terra, Bartz, and all the other random people whos story you are now so deeply involved in.

Just an update.

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Well, I have completed the story mode in Dissidia, so I can soon begin work on my review of the game.

On a side note, I discovered that their was a Tetris version for the PSP, and purchased it via the playstation store. It is installing now, so I have yet to play it, but this brought up a thought: EVERYTHING should have Tetris on it. No, I do not mean there should be tetris available, no no: I mean that every single device that can possibly play the game should have it available on the device, by default. Period.

That would be so kick ass.

New game review coming soon!

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I am planning a new video game review!

This one will be: Dissidia Final Fantasy, for the Sony PSP system.

At the time of this writing I have only had the game around 6 days, so I am waiting until I get a little more time in to write up my thoughts. Stay locked in! :D

12 years later…

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

So, there is an old project of mine that I am thinking about getting back to.

See, back in middle and high school, all I ever did was conceptualize games, anime, and other things I would love to one day have a hand in creating. I wrote out basic plot mechanics, devised systems, and sketched character designs; I basically taught myself the art of pre-prodouction, to a degree.

However, due to events in my life, by the time of summer 2003 I had, well, not to say abandoned these projects, but simply stopped working on most of them. I came up with some new ones, and evolved another project into what it is today, but soon devoted all my efforts into music games and such. The result of that is KuriMix, but that is another long story…

Well, the project in question was inspired by Final Fantasy 7, 8, and several other random games and anime I enjoyed at the time. It was intended to be an RPG spread over 4 or 5 games, and I, very seriously, wrote out over an hour of just back story (literally, I once told a friend the entire back story, and it took us one solid hour out in her driveway.) Well, I still have some of the notebooks, and some of the images drawn way back when, including the precious world map I had sketched out freshman year of high school. Seem the last time I really worked on the story was May of 2003, based on some old data stored on a long-dead hard drive.

Well, 2003-2010 is a long time.. and I have changed some concepts, and found many errors in my old plot ideas. I still remember most of the story, as well, which is great, because I can work on it “mentally” without having to write or type anything down with urgency: it is unlikely for me to forget a new idea, or an edit I made to something so embedded into my memory.

The question is, what to do with the project now? What to turn it into? Just what do you do with a 12 year old video game idea? :\

Frogger

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

You know, I just thought about something.

JUST HOW MANY CONSOLES IS FROGGER ON?

I mean, seriously, think about this:

Atari 2600 (2 versions no less)

Atari 5200

NES (i would imagine. too lazy to check)

Sega Genesis

Playstation

…and I am sure MANY more.

I mean, it just came as a random thought I wanted to shout out. Seriously, frogger is a good game, but man, it still isn’t pac-man. This kinda makes me think of just how many consoles Defender is on as well. Kinda random to think. *shrug*

PSPGET

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

So, yesterday I decided to go ahead and buy a new PSP.  Don’t ask details on the old one, I don’t want to get into it.  Welp, I downloaded Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Final Fantasy VII for 10 bucks each, and while my memory stick is fuller than the fat guy at Octoberfest, it is all worth it: I can finally get back to playing DJMAX and PIU Zero on the go, and play other pretty kick ass games on the fly.

I need a larger SD card, honestly. I can cram a few songs on here that I enjoy, and wouldnt mind blasting where people can hear, but other than that, eh… not much. heh. Good thing I have my Zune anyway, for music.

U;nee

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

So, it is January 20th.. which means, sometime this afternoon here in the states, it will be sometime between 7 and 9 AM in South Korea.

It was at that time on January 21st, 2007, that Korean singer and actress Heo Yoon, better known as U;nee (Pronounced “Yuni”) killed herself.

I mention this publicly every year, because I feel it is something that should pe payed attention to, not just with her, but with the heavy suicide rate in Korean pop culture. The pressures can be so high, that when compounded with the common soft nature that seems to be so common in many people in east Asia, the stress can just be too much.

As for Unee herself, I love her music, and think she was incredibly pretty naturally. I own 2 of her 3 albums: U;nee Code, and Habit. I sadly do not own her second album, Call Call Call. It seems to be impossible to find. If anyone happens to want to sell a sealed copy, or any copy honestly, that is complete, I would pay quite a nice sum.

That is besides the point though.  I would like to think I know how she felt towards the end, as it seems she and I share a similar depression type, one that just seems to be unable to be cured or controlled in any way.

So, combined with Michelle, and a few other situations in my life, I wonder just what all is going thru their minds in those last moments… and how could someone actually help?

Eh, I need to stay happy.  I think I will spend the day enjoying her music and trying to have a really good day.  Now, sleep.

Today will be a good day.

Also of note, her first single, “Go” was a featured track in the game “Pump it Up: Exceed” and if memory serves, every single one of its sequals. In Pump it Up NX2 and NX Absolute, there is a mission called “Memorial Service” which features the song, as a tribute to her.

Odball

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

So, I come home from work, and a small package is waiting for me.

I open it, not at all knowing what it could be.

Turns out, it is a one of 17 only in the world game for the Magnavox Odyssey, titled “Odball”: the ONLY homebrew game for the Odyssey.  It makes use of the unreleased game cart 11, and from the looks of things, is pretty sweet. Things is, I do not have an odyssey to play it on, yet, but I will procure one soon enough.  I would take pics for you, but with my camera falling  in water, well, enough said there. :\

Really cool thing is, it came with an autographed cirtificate, which is pretty sweet, as it personalizes the copy.

BTW, I got number 15 out of 17. :D

Do a search on Atari Age for it if you want to know more.
