Another standard E3 event this year was the first gameplay trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, a game that you would think would be the highlight of the upcoming gaming season that instead is being treated like the worst thing ever.
Why though? Why are people hating on Infinite Warfare? Because it’s too futurist? Because it’s set in space? Considering it’s a Call of Duty game, odds are high that the gameplay experience will be solid, even top tier as most Call of Duty games have been over the past decade. Everything negative seems to focus purely on the setting.
Explain to me why this is an issue. Why is it okay for Black Ops 3 to feature “gravity spike” weapons and other sci-fi elements, or why the Exo suits in Advanced Warfare were okay, but the game series taking a look at what war in the moderate future might be like is somehow past the line?
I’m serious. If you look at the comments on the below video, they range from snide remarks like “sure, because bullets work in space” (an attempt at sarcasm that shows the persons ignorance to science because yes, a standard bullet WILL fire in a vacuum – the gun might not work right, but that’s another story), too just outright stupidity. People complain that CoD has always been about the past and present, but not the future.. even though the past few years games have been set in many near future situations, and have sci-fi weaponry abound; not withstanding the fact that they claim that the game has to be set to a certain time frame because, it has been before.
Heck, the number one criticism about Call of Duty has been that it’s the same game over and over, and after a decade of being top dog on consoles, it’s finally time for them to change things up a bit, but of course, people get mad about such.
One comment said it was the bandwagon effect, and I’m inclined to agree – it’s hate for hates sake, once someone “popular” says it’s bad, everyone says it’s bad, just like when something terrible is touted as good, suddenly everyone likes it. It’s the reason you have celebrities say they like your product, to get people to like it because most just go with the flow.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare looks like a good game. A damn good game. I enjoy Sci-Fi and I like the play style that Call of Duty has, and no, I’m not a CoD fanboy: I only just this past year actually played a modern CoD game, and while I do like them, I’m far from obsessed. I like games for what they are, and this looks like a fine piece of entertainment software.
