Last week I was watching some videos receiving far-away TV transmission when this video was recommended by YouTube – it’s a 1986 American public access show which covers Soviet state TV recorded over 1985 and 1986 – this includes comedy programs, news (including an early Chernobyl report), game shows, special reports on their space program, and investigative journalism – much like the TV of the 80’s and 90’s in the US.
It’s interesting to see the rather free nature of Soviet TV in the 80’s – as I said it isn’t far removed from how our programming was back then, and contrary to what one would think, free expression was common, so long as it didn’t directly criticize the government in and of itself.
Still, differences can be seen, such as how “horrible” rock music is, and the odd opinions given about Reagan in “man on the street” interviews from the US.
This is one of those more odd videos that someone like me certainly will find interesting. As always, enjoy!
