Stumbling across this today it looks like last night one of the YouTubers I like and have featured before, Carey Holzman, got a very odd voicemail from what is obviously an IRS scammer. As a response, he set up a quick (20 minute) live stream to discuss who the scammers might be, why they are doing what they do, and while he tries to get through to no real results, Carey does spend the time talking about the scammers.
Interestingly, Carey chalks the scammer situation, at least, the lower level employees who actively conduct the scam, up to them being uneducated. They don’t realize the problems with what they are doing or, as has been shown sometimes in tech support scams, some don’t even know they are doing something wrong, which really is a case of sheer ignorance – those who run these scams reap the benefits of the populations ignorance and, I’ll just say it, downright stupidity in some cases.
It’s a hard thing to talk about within sounding like you are insulting India, or it’s people, on a whole: certainly I think neither Carey nor myself are doing such, only speaking in what we understand as to be the case with these particular individuals – it’s better than saying they all do this intentionally, and accusing everyone involved of being a criminal outright, is it not?
It’s somewhat funny hearing Carey suggest that you just talk over them, insult them, and do your best to tie up their phone lines while aggravating them! Normally you wouldn’t hear someone, especially someone as professional as Carey Holzman is, suggesting such, but that just shows the level of respect (or lack thereof) that he has for them.
I love the fact that the entire video, Carey stresses that this is from India.. because it is! It’s a demonstrable truth; it isn’t racist, it isn’t some sort of targeted hatred, it’s just a fact, as he says it.
Ah well, I won’t go over it any more. Just enjoy… This is a rather good one!
Oh, and if it’s up, give the number a clall

The scammer had a 502 area code? That’s Louisville, Kentucky. Holy crap.
Ya know, I didn’t think to look it up. Wow.
They really do go for whatever numbers they can get though, so long as they seem “legit” in some way – certainly they don’t want to use a number from India, so using a number via VOIP in the US just makes total sense.
I only remembered that because my childhood phone number had a 502 area code. And yes, the area code still works in that area.
As for why the odd area code…that certainly makes sense.
