Apparently, less than a year after bankruptcy, gaming accessory maker Mad Catz is back! Apparently a company in China that was involved in the manufacturing side of some of their products purchased what remained of the company and brought the brand back, alongside many of the more popular and well received PC gaming accessories the company had been producing before their demise early last year.
This is interesting, to say the least – I’ve never seen a company so quickly actually cease to exist and be brought pack. Sure, brands have been purchased and used as a name, and eventually some other companies, after many years have eventually been revived, but I can’t think of too many others that within a year of complete bankruptcy and shutdown have had a buyer resurrect the entire company as its own thing – not to say it hasn’t happened before, only this is a first for me to catch wind of in my time, especially so far as gaming is.
The official statement is that the newly reformed company also has all new management – no one running the prior form of the company is involved here – and they will be showing off some of their products at CES this year, so we’ll have that to look forward to.
I have a feeling this new Mad Catz will focus on the professional and e-sports markets, producing higher quality premium products. Time will tell if / when they will dive into the more typcial console field again, but it would be nice to have quality 3rd party options that aren’t Power-A and the like. If Mad Catz accessories were considered poor, they are still way better than the current options available from other companies, to say the least.
We’ll follow this one, maybe. It should be interesting to see how things go. More to come, I hope, on this front.
