We have another odd Nerd episode here – one discussing the timeline for “The Legend of Zelda” game series, at least as it was in 2006. This comes off the previous “Movie and Video Game sequels” video, but was shelved, only to be tweaked a bit and released in January 2008, making it out of date already by then.
This is actually a somewhat interesting subject as up until rather recently the entire history and proper story order for the game series has been kind of a mess. Games are all reported to come before, after, or in alternate timelines from one another, while also having their positions changed outright when new games are released. Stuff’s crazy, to say the least. We’re talking whole generational gaps, meaning there are multiple Zeldas and Links… it’s odd, to say the least.
Fans had all kinds of theories, specialty naming schemes to keep up with things, and just… it was crazy. I remember friends having long conversations on this very subject.
Now, of course, that doesn’t matter – in 2011 an official timeline was published by Nintendo, called “The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia” which explains everything, at least up to that time, or so my understanding of the book goes.
I don’t know. I don’t dislike the Zelda games, but I don’t play them often, and certainly haven’t played anything recent. Not totally my cup of tea, as they say.
That being said, what James covers here, as the Nerd, is well worth thinking about, and goes to show how in depth fans will dissect these games they love. Nothing wrong with that at all. Hell, that’s part of the fun – we game to escape and enjoy other worlds, just like others read books, or watch TV shows and movies.
Gotta say, James adding in the CDi games, the Zelda cartoon, and even Smash Bros. into the mix is rather funny, if only done to jokingly add even more chaos to the mix.
I can’t give this episode a rating, seeing as it isn’t a “typical” Nerd episode, but, well, it’s certainly something worth covering. It’s not bad, it’s not good. It’s just what it is – an experiment. One that didn’t go so well and thankfully James didn’t try again, at least not in this format as an actual Nerd episode.
Enjoy.
