In the time span since the announcement of the PlayStation Classic and the subsequent announcement of the 20 games on the console, there’s been quite a bit of debate on if this latest mini retro console is actually something you should buy. People have done comparisons on the value of actual PS1 hardware and the separate games (or just buying the individual games you may want) and of course every other person brings up that you can just emulate these games fine on most any computer, defeating the purpose of the device, but we won’t get into that here, not just for legal reasons, but because that’s missing some of the reason for these consoles – at least for this discussion it does.
The big sticking point for the console really has been the game list. I went over it a few weeks ago and found myself not too excited, but there were some titles that I wouldn’t mind having in such a device. I would get my money’s worth, I think, out of it, but am I going to buy one? Probably not.
This is really the same thought process everyone has to go through in most any purchase decision revolving around gaming, but especially with this one – is this worth it to me? Will I enjoy this? If you think yes, then go for it. If you feel like you might, maybe it’s better to hold off.
Okay, yeah, this all was bloody obvious. Why then did I even write this?
Because there’s a large contention of people thinking that because they don’t like the PlayStation Classic, that no one should buy one. This is an absurd idea – just because you don’t care for something, that doesn’t mean someone else can’t fully enjoy it.
On that same page, though, just because you like something also doesn’t mean someone else cannot dislike that very thing. It goes both ways, and in discussion with gaming especially this fact seems to be lost. I’m just seeing it far heavier with the PlayStation Classic hate community than I have with many other things, recently.
If you want it, get it. If you don’t? Don’t. That simple. It shouldn’t take articles like this and YouTube videos from every flavor of the week trendwhore to tell you what should be obvious.
It’s just games. Enjoy them for yourself, and leave it at that.
