They may be sparse, and they may be minor, but the Xbox 360 is indeed still getting the occasional update! The most recent of these was just a few days ago, on November 12th, with prior updates happening on August 21st, 2019 and lastly the “first update in two years” happening on May 22nd of 2018, that update having followed a substantial gap that lead many to think the Xbox 360 had finally been effectively abandoned by Microsoft.
This clearly isn’t the case, and while there aren’t any major updates happening — no new dash experiences or major feature improvements, as every update in the past few years has just been ” Minor bug fixes and improvements ” the fact remains that Microsoft is still pushing these out for the nearly 15 year old console.
On the other side of things, the PlayStation 3 has also had a steady string of updates that are officially listed as similarly improving system performance. I’ve heard rumor that these updates are actually purely anti-piracy updates (poorly made ones, at that. seeing as “custom firmware” versions of these updates are release just days later) but I won’t say for sure one way or the other, and while I think Sony is letting the PlayStation 3 limp along, at least they are still trying.
Microsoft, on the other hand, in a sense has to keep the Xbox 360 going, at least for a little while longer, given the life-extension Xbox 360 software has had with the Games with Gold program providing 360 games every month even to the present day, and with a large volume of games for the 360 being playable on the Xbox One.
Still, much as I wondered in my recent article about the recent life and future of the Xbox 360, I have to question just how much longer the console truly has, which would make as good as any an article to be written soon.
It’s funny, had you told me 10 years ago that I’d be writing about Xbox 360 updates, in 2019 no less, I’d have said you were crazy. How things change…
