Season 5 of the Angry Video Game Nerd was a bit of a departure from the previous few years of the show. This season had far fewer episodes than previous ones, as James began to focus his efforts on other projects including the beginning of production in earnest of The Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie. All taken together, releases were sporadic but on a whole the production quality of the episode was kept good. Honestly, every episode was good during this period. They all clearly took time to create, with only Lester the Unlikely feeling a bit “rushed” in any capacity. Then you have episodes like R.O.B. The Robot which, at the time, was the most complex AVGN episode to date, editing and production wise.
The game and subject selection this time around was pretty random – Day Dreamin’ Davey wasn’t a game I’d think would be in the series, having never heard of it before and only playing it for a short bit in high school, but apparently it wound up being an overall good one to cover. The re-visiting of Top Gun, Back To The Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde brought about a sense of completeness after James had taken a second look at Castlevania II – Simon’s Quest in the Castlevaniathon episodes in Season 4.
The change to Widescreen was also, as James implemented it, a welcome addition. In the R.O.B. episode he used the TV set as a “border” for the gameplay screens, rather than leaving blank sides, which is good, but by Spielberg Games he had gone to just leaving the 4:3 aspect ratio footage on screen as it is, rather than doing what many other classic gaming YouTube creators do of either stretching it or doing that “zoom and blur” thing that’s incredibly annoying. Given his film making background it makes sense he would leave the footage unedited in this way.
So, yeah, a short season, sure. That’s just how things panned out. Keep in mind the whole “Season” aspect was actually an after thought in episode grouping and, in fact, while the official list on the Cinemassacre website says that Spielberg Games is a part of Season 5, it’s not in the Season 5 compilation video, but is instead in the Season 6 video. Just a thing of note that I found interesting.
