After the pretty terrible showing last month from the Games with Gold lineup, I’ve gotta say I wasn’t hoping for much this time around. At first glance the selection looks like a joke, but once I looked a little more closely I’m seeing more to enjoy this time around. Let’s take a look.
Starting off we have Portal Knights and Override: Mech City Brawl.
At first I thought both of these would be party games, but it doesn’t seem that way: Portal Knights is apparently a sandbox action RPG which, if the gameplay is solid, could actually hold my interest for a while. Possibly. We’ll see.
Override: Mech City Brawl looks like a pretty neat game on its own, as well – a mech combat game that looks a good bit anime inspired and, like Portal Knights, looks to be more for general audiences.
On the Xbox 360 end of things we instead of two Xbox titles – not something we normally see in a Games with Gold lineup.
Opening the month we get MX Unleashed, a nice enough arcade Motocross game. Yeah, it’s another damn racing game but this is from the era where arcade style racers were still more about the fun and less about the realisim and, add in that I actually like Motocross some this won’t be too bad to play sometimes.
Lastly, we have the only “typical” game on the list, Red Faction II, a good old FPS set on Mars. The Red Faction series had a decent fan base back in the day, and while dated this one looks like it might be a fun early 2000’s FPS experience so I’ll probably check this one out as well.
And that’s that. Better than last month, but still kind of “eh” for most people, as the video ratings show.
I’d like to end with one more note – I’ve been so busy, and cared so little about the game selection this past month that I actually forgot to redeem one of the games – Saints Row! Yeah, after 5 years I missed a game. Oh well. I’ll live and I probably already have a physical copy somewhere anyway.
