File this one under “stuff that doesn’t surprise me in the least” but apparently one of the many design flaws in Tesla’s Cybertruck involves the acceleration pedal breaking free from its mounting and getting stuck in full acceleration position!
You can’t make this shit up. Some engineer, with a fancy degree, getting paid I can imagine reasonably well didn’t notice that, in the unlikely but still possible event the foot pad for the acceleration control comes loose that it will slide upward and forwards and happen to wedge itself under the lower panel of the console, thus locking it in a depressed state!
To me it just seems like an elementary thing to consider — you don’t want any reasonable chance for part that makes something weighing nearly 3 and a half tons go fast to get stuck in the go fast position. I know, maybe that was a bit over the average Elongated Muskrat fans understanding of basic science but that’s bad.
Now, coinciding with this there has been the announcement of a stop in Cybertruck order deliveries until, apparently April 20th.. which is only 5 days away. Hmn, they must think they will have a fix to this problem really soon… you know, because it isn’t like anything else can get stuck down there and cause the same issue. Nope, that tight space as you can see in the above video may be a bit much for the pedal if it comes loose, but the same constant acceleration problem can’t happen if anything else long and ridged happens to fall in that same position and get wedged there. Yep, this isn’t a design flaw that goes beyond just a pedal coming loose.
Of course, if you can’t tell, I’m being sarcastic here.
Now, the fucked up thing is that, having ridden in quite a few of them, I actually kind of do like Tesla vehicles. That being said, I don’t like Elon Musk, nor the cult that follows him, and I’m not going to hold any punches when I talk about subjects related to him, Tesla, SpaceX, or any other bullshit he’s involved with.
This, though, is just kind of wild. Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 but I really would expect better from this company, since they claim to be on the cutting edge of vehicle technology, have quite the sum of money behind them to devote to testing and, you know, the fact that situations to cause a stuck accelerator are, I would think, something that would be heavily looked for in every design iteration of a vehicle, given that this has been a problem with automobiles since forever, in one capacity or another — that is to say, it’s something that I would think people would be looking for and someone should have seen the lack of clearance there and simply said “hey, this, uh, isn’t right.”
That’s ignoring all the other complaints about the Cybertruck which, quite honestly, I could care less about. If you want to buy that ugly thing that’s your business, but when it has a safety flaw like this? That’s fucking mental.
