The Eurolovers YouTube Channel – A Follow Up

A little while back I wrote about the eurobeat music YouTube channel “Eurolovers” being taken down. Following that, I found out that someone had shared it on Reddit, not once now, but twice. Not only that, it has also been mentioned on Eurobeat Prime, one of, if not the top Eurobeat fan site out there. The threads provided some interesting information though, but also raised quite a few questions.

Basically, from what I can understand, Eurolovers was “allowed” to exist by SAIFAM, under the condition that videos weren’t monetized. The owner did just that, and shortly afterwards the channel was taken down.

Now, that’s odd. Very odd.

You see, the way YouTube monetization generally works via copyright claims is that ad revenue for the claimed content goes to the copyright claimant, presuming the video stays up. That, at least, is the most common action taken when a video isn’t removed completely – the company that claims the copyright throws their own ads on it and makes money off of it. Pretty straightforward.

Now, the only way I can think of this being complicated would be the laws in areas like Japan, Italy / the EU in general, and other possible locations for SAIFAM / AVEX / The Eurolovers channel owner(s). Due to the laws in the area such claims might not be possible, or would act differently, which would make the above story about monetization make more sense, possibly.

It’s a strange situation, to be sure, and I’ve only barely read the eurobeat-prime thread: I’ve honestly been too busy to really dive deep, but what I have seen is quite interesting and uncommon as far as YouTube copyright is concerned.

Remember, if you haven’t, check out the other articles on this subject for more information.

  1. Hi, there. I like to comment on this since it as I (DirectorK) was the one who created that topic on both Eurobeat-Prime and on ID Forums. Now as I said I’m not trying to endorse pirating in any shape or form, but like you I’m pretty mystified about all this because something doesn’t add up.

Why would the guy suddenly decide to monetize his videos when he’s never done it before? Why did SAIFAM claim the whole channel instead of just their songs? And if they were the ones running it, why keep it a big secret? Were they afraid that AVEX might come down on them? All they had to do was work out some sort of deal where EUROLOVERS was the official Eurobeat channel. Bam! Problem solved! It would have saved them a lot of trouble.

This entire fiasco started when SEB 241 was released. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this happen, but never on a scale like this. Eurobeat videos were being deleted or blocked left and right and EUROLOVERS ended up getting the worst of it. Some people who have Eurobeat music channels have said that AVEX had claimed other videos that had nothing to do with Eurobeat. This all leads back to the stupid Content ID system YouTube put up back at the end of 2013 when they teamed up with Google Plus. Ever since that system came out the copyright system has been screwed up. And now that YouTube Heroes is around it’s gotten even worse. It’s getting to the point now where people are just outright afraid to upload ANYTHING.

I agree with you though that it very odd that SAIFAM claimed the entire channel because that means that someone in their department was operating it. As I mentioned in my post on EBP, it does make sense though seeing how closely I followed the channel over the years. Over a third of EUROLOVERS videos were SIAFAM and Hi-NRG Attack stuff, half of which had never been released. The first 25-50 songs her ever uploaded were all SAIFAM stuff.

So the question is: “What the hell happened?”

What really shut down this channel? I just bring can’t myself to believe that EUROLOVERS suddenly got greedy because he had to have known how important his channel was when it came to Eurobeat. And according to that source you had, the guy didn’t start monetizing his videos until the 12th. If I remember correctly, that was around the time he finally uploaded videos from SEB 241. So why now and when he could have done it years before especially when Eurobeat made its return in 2013? It’s so sudden something just doesn’t add up.

What I think what happened is that either someone hacked the channel or some “friend” took over and was doing it on their own and the guy(s) who originally ran the channel wasn’t aware it until it was too late. This may explain why the person never replied to any of the artists or producers when they brought the issue up(then again he never replied to anyone except answer their requests with uploads). If he had told them that he wasn’t doing it on purpose and someone else was, the channel might have been saved.

I’ve spoken with one of the producers of Eurobeat recently through an open letter about this issue and I’m going to email him again and inform him of what you’ve posted here because you’re right. This revelation about SAIFAM is really odd and something fishy is going on. We can only hope by some miracle that EUROLOVERS is able to get his channel back.

    1. The rabbit hole keeps getting deeper and deeper with this one. I’m surprised my posting about it, and my friend helping hunt for info, has made such a big splash as it has. So many things just don’t add up, and as you all posted more about it, with your stories and ideas, it all became a big bubble of “what the f is going on here?”

I didn’t know much on the SEB 241 end – I recall some odd things going on, but I never thought much about it, seeing as I thought the whole time it was a fan channel and nothing more that had, somehow, avoided copyright. It’s a strange, strange story. Keep me informed on everything you find out, if you can – I want to keep posting about this until it’s resolved, as this just too interesting.

Lastly, as I’ve said before, I’m very glad these posts have helped you all out.
